Horseback Riding at Fair Hill
At one time one of the largest private land holdings in the East, Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area is a hallmark for some of Maryland’s most favorite past-times and recreations like horseback riding. Its 6,000-acre mix of woods and fields, scenic landscapes, and bubbling streams makes Fair Hill the perfect place to immerse yourself in rural Maryland and it’s best done on horseback at Fair Hill Stables. Rooted in the country’s colonial traditions as well as the passions of former Fair Hill owner and equestrian, William DuPont, Jr., horseback riding through the trails at Fair Hill is at the top of every “can’t-miss” list.
Fair Hill Stables is the best resource for a guided horseback tour of the property’s extensive and varied 80-mile trail system. William DuPont Jr., who purchased the property in 1926, built the Fair Hill Stables barn and foxhound kennels so he could enjoy fox hunting several days a week. Today, you can find the kennel to the left of entering Fair Hill Stables and the foxhounds can still be seen lounging in their pens.
Because riding a horse is a specialized skill that takes time to learn, Fair Hill Stables offer three different levels of trail riding: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Beginner riders will enjoy a relaxed pace that is walk only while more experienced riders will enjoy areas with footing suitable to a quicker speed and trotting. Advanced trails combine walk, trot, and canter to move further into the park and enjoy a wider range of scenery.
Visit the website to get more information about a guided horseback riding tour with Fair Hill Stables. A one hour trail ride is $40 per person.
